Each folder in this folder is a profile on your computer.
In the Windows Explorer window that opens, choose Thunderbird → Profiles. Click the "Roaming" item that appears on the menu. In the the "Start Search" box, type in %APPDATA% (exactly as you see it there). The easy way to find your Thunderbird email is to close Thunderbird completely, then open the Windows Start menu. Luckily, we're only interested in Windows 7 or 8.1, since that's what you'll be upgrading to 10 from. Once you've compacted your mail folders, you're ready to back them up. Gmail, Microsoft, Apple, and others use IMAP. The other type of service is called IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol), and it keeps a copy of your mail on the server, so that you can access exactly the same mail from any device - desktop, laptop, phone, tablet . That type of service is called POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3).
That's one of the disadvantages of your Internet Service Provider's mail service they have elected to store none of your email. Since I know, from your return address, what email provider you're using, I can tell that you're downloading all your mail to your own computer, and not keeping it on the server. Of course, if you're using the very latest version of Thunderbird, you select the three bars icon on the far right (believe it or not, that's called the "hamburger menu"), select the Advanced icon, then select the "Network & Disk Space" tab, then hit the "Clear Now button to both clear your cache and compact all of your folders. Just start Thunderbird, then select File -> Compact Folders, and wait. Thunderbird does a regular compression - which you can see at Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Network & Disk Space -> "Compact folders when it will save over X MB" - so you don't have to do one by hand usually, but before a move, you should definitely do one. You should be regularly backing up everything anyway (right, people?), but do an extra backup just before you do the upgrade.įor Thunderbird, you should compress your email first - this gets rid of stuff you've deleted, and makes the resulting files smaller.
First, as always, back up everything before you upgrade. There are several points to be made here, Betty Ann. If I download Windows 10 will I lose all my saved e-mails? I have many I can't afford to lose. I use Thunderbird Mail for my e-mails and Firefox as my search engine.
